I used to listen to a radio theater podcast called The Truth. They usually aired science fiction and somewhat supernatural radio plays, and I always enjoyed them. I think radio plays don’t get the attention they deserve; in my humble opinion, they provide a very pleasurable and engaging listening experience. They’re more lively and animated than audiobooks, and they can be enjoyed on the go, without needing to sit in one place.
Radio plays also involve the unique art of creating a complete scene using only sound—both visual and auditory effects conveyed solely through listening. This poses a real challenge for the artists involved, including the actors, sound engineers, producers, and directors.
I’ve been thinking about dabbling in the art of writing plays myself. I did a few for an online program/course that I had joined years ago. I’ve always enjoyed it, but I’ve considered it more of a hobby or practice because there don’t seem to be many venues for publishing them. However, I’d like to try writing some one-act plays and see how that goes. I might write them just for the joy of it or perhaps publish them on my website.
P.S. I just learned that The Truth podcast is ending. I’m sorry to hear that. I wish them all the best, and I highly recommend listening to all their episodes. Their work is really great. Here’s their website:
