One of the most popular tropes in dystopian fiction is the totalitarian government. This type of government controls every aspect of people’s lives, from what they think and say to how they live and work. Totalitarian governments are often portrayed as being oppressive and ruthless, using violence and fear to maintain control.
Here are some examples of totalitarian governments in some of my favorite dystopian fiction:
– 1984 by George Orwell: The government in 1984 is all-seeing and all-powerful, controlling everything from people’s thoughts to their language.
The first page in the novel reveals how Big Brother sees you everywhere you go!
– The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood: The Republic of Gilead in The Handmaid’s Tale is a theocratic state that has overthrown the United States government. Women are forced into servitude, and their bodies are used for reproduction.
And the novel starts when women go as usual to work and are turned away and how they can’t have access to their bank accounts!
